As if my virtual mild hangover last week might not be enough to convince me that I don’t want to go back to overindulging in alcohol, this week I was reminded of how awful a full-blown hangover can be. I was struck by a sickness bug that had me off work and practically bed-ridden for 2 days. As I lay groaning, knowing that I was not yet done with the puking, it was at least a little comfort to know that my condition wasn’t self-inflicted.
I first came across Amy Johnson’s The Little Book of Big Change in 2020 via an episode of the This Naked Mind podcast. I took note of it but never got around to seeking it out. It popped up in my recommendations on Audible earlier this month so I decided to download it and I’m so glad I did. It ties in very nicely with all the other stuff I’ve been reading these past few months so I doubt it would have resonated as well in 2020 but I get it now and I do believe the approach it prescribes for changing bad habits and overcoming addictions will stand me in good stead for not going back to my old ways once my year-long ban on alcohol has been lifted. It may even help with that pesky sweet tooth that I keep banging on about. Funnily enough, it’s pretty much the antithesis of the “put the habit under the microscope” approach that I was hoping Annie Grace would present me with and far more in line with the Sedona Method of just letting it go. The idea is that focusing on a habit that you want to change and trying to figure it out, just gives it more power – far better to meet your urges as they come up and see them as nonsense chatter, created by your mind, that will pass. We’ll see – the more tools I have in my box, the better.
