Thank You For The Music

SUNDAY 14TH MAY 2023

On Friday, I finished up work for a week and then went to a party at night.  Although I’ve often opted to drive for ease, with a combination of 2 reasons to celebrate, I might’ve drunk at this event, had I not been currently abstinent.

I might’ve mentioned it before but, if not, in recent years, I’ve found big social events quite difficult.  I get overwhelmed seeing so many people that I need to engage with in the one place – I much prefer catching up with people on a one-to-one basis or in small groups.   I can’t deny that Dutch courage is always helpful in these situations, just to get over that feeling of awkwardness but, when alcohol’s not on the menu, there’s no option but to dig deep and tough it out.   So, when there’s no relief coming from your 0% beer, where do you find it?  Music – God bless music!  Once the silent disco started, I headed for the dance floor and barely sat back down till it was time to go.  That’s the beauty of the silent disco – with 3 channels of music to choose from, there’s always something you want to dance to.  There was no itching to get back to the table for a sip of my whatever and, I can honestly say, that the iced water that was poured for me at the bar after I’d danced my pants off, was more enjoyable than any alcoholic drink would ever have been in that situation.   I’ve always loved music but, in recent years, I fear I had gotten out of the habit of listening to it as much – maybe just another symptom of having kids and generally too much on my plate or maybe it was more sinister evidence of the rut I’d gotten myself into.  Since I’ve been making an effort to do whatever it takes to feel good, I’ve been reminded of what a source of sheer joy listening to music can be. Sometimes I’ll have Alexa play me something uplifting while I’m getting ready for work and I practically skip out the door with a grin on my face.  What a way to raise one’s vibration at the start of the day!  Sadly, I’m not musical myself so I can only admire in awe the talent that goes into making music and the power it has and I can’t help but think that those who make it are the living embodiment of the Law of Attraction at work.
