SUNDAY 30TH APRIL 2023
Up and out running before work 4 mornings out of 5 this week. Check me out – acting like the person I want to become! The only reason I didn’t go for it on Friday morning was to save my energy for a gig that night.
MY WHY
It wasn’t my first sober gig – there have been many over the years for various reasons – but here is yet another activity that people tend to drink alcohol at, unless they’ve got a specific reason not to. Why? Having done the concert experience both ways, I can honestly say that alcohol does not enhance it – if anything, it’s a hindrance. For a start, more often than not, you’ve got to queue for a good while at the bar to get served. I remember once, being so intent on getting the drinks in that I missed almost all of the support band, which wouldn’t normally be an issue, but on that occasion, it was The Village People. Sure, I’d never have paid to go and see them but I’m sure watching them would’ve been more fun and memorable than standing in the bar queue. Once the gig starts, there are 2 options: keep drinking during the gig, which means more bar queuing time and not being able to dance properly, or stop drinking, which will lead to you sobering up and by the end of it the hangover is setting in and you just feel crap. Either way, you’re going to have to miss part of the concert to go to the loo. And it’s not just the musical gigs – I’ve been to comedy shows that have just been a blur because I’d had a few drinks beforehand. I’ve also fallen asleep in the cinema after having gone for a couple of drinks before I went in. I mean, what was the point of that?! I’m pleased to say that I learned my lesson a long time ago and it’s many years since I missed out on a show due to alcohol consumption but live music has, until now, been the last bastion of spectacles at which I would be inclined to drink alcohol. Maybe, in the future, I should read over this post before I go to a gig, just to remind myself why I probably shouldn’t drink at it, if I really want to enjoy it. Mind you, if my husband ever manages to persuade me to join him at any of the dj-type events that he enjoys, that really aren’t my thing, I might decide to indulge!
